What is a Dental Implant?
A dental implant is quite simply a small titanium post that we can surgically install into your jaw, either top or bottom, and acts as the root to a false tooth or another artificial system. This is a great option because it is incredibly healthy. An implant can support a fixed bridge, a denture, or a crown. These options all become permanent when they are bonded with the post. Any of these options act as a better alternative to a removable appliance that sits on top of your gum line. An implant, whenever you chew, stimulates the bone beneath the surface of your gums.
Any prosthetic (dentures) that sits on top of the gums wears down on the area, causing not only gum discomfort over time, but also bone loss. This can make it much more challenging to make any repairs later on in life. It can also cause pain during the time that you wear it, as it can shift, slide, and get food trapped underneath. An implant secures the prosthetic of your choice in place. This not only provides a very natural look but also means that you will find yourself much more comfortable. The bone does not diminish, no food can get trapped beneath, they are just as strong as your natural teeth and do not move, and they can be incredibly long lasting if properly taken care of.
How Do I Get a Dental Implant?
Not everyone is a candidate for dental implants, but many people are. We can help you to determine if an implant is right for you. The first thing we are going to have to decide is whether or not your bone is strong enough for an implant. If you have had a missing tooth for a long time, you may have experienced boneless which means you likely need a bone grafting procedure first. However, if you are set to go, we will start by numbing the area with local (or general if you prefer) anesthetic.
Then, we will open up your gums from the top so that we can see and access the bone. From there, we will be able to implant the post and seal it up for healing. Over the next 4-6 months, the post will fuse completely with the bone surrounding it, providing you with a strong base for any artificial tooth prosthetic. You will have a temporary piece until your mouth is healed enough for the permanent option.
Medhat Dental Excellence has your best interests in mind. We will work hard to get your mouth back to its peak health, and no one will take better care of you and your implants than we will.
