Inlays and Onlays Chicago, IL
Inlays and Onlays, also known as indirect fillings, are a type of dental restoration, used for mild to moderate decay, or when the structure of the tooth is compromised beyond the usefulness of a traditional filling. They are manufactured in a dental laboratory using porcelain, gold, or sometimes composite resin material, and then bonded to the tooth using an adhesive dental cement. An indirect filling is considered to be an “inlay” when it can be placed onto the center of the tooth’s surface without covering the cusp. An “onlay” is used when the damage to the tooth is so great that one or more of the cusps must be covered to secure its structural integrity. Inlays and onlays offer a stronger, more precise fit, and longer-lasting restorative solution over traditional fillings. They are also known as a more conservative option to dental crowns, which involve complete coverage and a reshaping of the tooth.
An inlay or onlay procedure is completed in two trips to the dental office. First, Dr. Medhat will prepare the damaged tooth and take an impression or mold of the area. This will be sent to the laboratory, where the technicians will design a permanent restoration. You will be given a temporary or provisional restoration to protect the tooth while the final product is being manufactured. The material of the restoration largely depends on the location of the tooth. Gold is the best option when aesthetics are not a concern (such as molars). If the tooth is visible when smiling, porcelain is the best option because it can be shaded to match your existing tooth and offer the best esthetics. If you grind your teeth or have a misaligned bite, then resin material may be the best option. Talk with Dr. Medhat about which option is best for you. During your second visit, the temporary restoration will be removed and replaced with your new inlay or onlay. Dr. Medhat will make sure that the bond is secure, precisely fitted, and ensure that your bite will not be affected by the restoration.
There can be several benefits to consider when decided if an inlay or onlay is right for you.
If your tooth is too weak due to a sizable cavity, or the structural integrity of the tooth has been comprised, then an indirect filling may not be right for you. Sometimes a dental crown is the only option. We here at Medhat Dental Excellence and Artistic Smiles Family Dental Care try to use inlays or onlays whenever possible.
