Dentures Chicago, IL
When you visit us at Medhat Dental Excellence with missing teeth and/or teeth that need extraction, we often recommend dentures. These are artificial teeth on a synthetic gum that we fabricate to replace your lost natural teeth. Replacing lost teeth is key in maintaining your smile and overall facial structure as well as allowing you to speak and eat naturally.
Dentures are custom made to fit your dental structure and have an appearance similar to that of the natural teeth. False teeth can be made from plastic and porcelain but hard resin is a more common material today because it is more resistant to damage. The synthetic gum is also made from resin or from a polymer which fits comfortably on your gumline. Depending on your situation, we may recommend complete or partial dentures.
Complete Dentures
Complete dentures, also referred to as full dentures, are a full arch of artificial teeth custom made to replace all your natural teeth on one or both jaws. They are held in place by a denture base. We recommend full dentures for patients who have lost all their teeth for any reason.
Conventional dentures will require you to make at least two visits to our office; one where we examine you and make impressions for your denture, and another where the custom-made denture is fit and cemented once your gum is healed after extractions.
If you do not want to leave our office without teeth, we may suggest an immediate denture. Immediate dentures may be fabricated on the day you visit our office, meaning you don't have to wait for them. These dentures are often worn while the gum is healing, and the conventional option is being fabricated.
Partial Dentures
Partial dentures are fitted in place of missing teeth on the top or bottom jaw. They are meant to provide the same structure and function of natural teeth. In other words, they serve to maintain your natural appearance and are a necessary support for the remaining natural teeth when it comes to biting and chewing. If the gap from the missing teeth is left unfilled, the remaining natural teeth will have more strain placed on them and may eventually shift to fill the gap. This causes issues with your bite. In addition, the gaps created by shifting teeth make room for plaque and tartar and consequently dental caries and gum disease.
While adjacent teeth adjacent teeth can support partial dentures, they are often recommended when the teeth that would serve as abutments are not strong enough for other dental replacement options such as a dental bridge. As such, partial dentures may be held in place by a gum-colored synthetic base, a metal frame or clasps, or by natural-looking connectors known as precision attachments. Our office is please to offer our patients same-day dentures, or immediate dentures, which can be an appropriate solution for certain individuals.
