A woman receiving Gum Disease Therapy in ChicagoRegular brushing and flossing are essential components of maintaining good oral health. Along with your home care routine, it is also recommended that you have dental cleanings and exams done at least twice a year. Being lax in your oral care, or completely ignoring any component, can quickly lead to plaque and bacteria buildup, both of which can lead to gum disease. At Medhat Dental Excellence, we can diagnose the various stages of gum disease and provide you with the treatment you need to restore your oral health.

The Development of Gum Disease

Gum disease begins when plaque and oral bacteria build up in your mouth and irritate your gum tissue. This irritation triggers an inflammatory response from the immune system, and the gums swell. These early symptoms, redness, and swelling, are often ignored or even unnoticed. Gum disease continues to progress untreated. Swollen gums pull away from the teeth, creating pockets. Bacteria fall into these pockets and begin to attack the periodontal ligaments and the jawbone along with the gums. The gums recede, the teeth become loose, and you may even experience tooth loss.

What Causes Gum Disease?

There are several factors that can lead to gum disease:
•  Poor oral hygiene practices. This is one of the most common causes of gum disease. Neglecting any part of your oral hygiene routine allows plaque and bacteria to build up in your mouth.
•  Crooked teeth. When your teeth are crooked, they are harder to thoroughly clean, providing ideal hiding places for bacteria.
•  Smoking. Cigarettes and other tobacco products restrict oxygen in your blood and slows blood flow. These issues inhibit the ability of your body to fight off infections.
•  Alcohol. Alcohol has a drying effect on the mouth, turning it into an ideal environment for bacterial growth.
•  Medication. Certain types of medication can lead to dry mouth.
•  Changes in your hormones. Hormonal changes, such as pregnancy and menopause, cause the gums to become more vulnerable.
•  Poor diet. Certain nutrients help to keep your gums healthy. Lacking these nutrients, often caused by poor diet, can increase your risk for gum disease.

Signs and Symptoms of Gum Disease

Symptoms of gum disease vary based on the severity of the condition. Common symptoms include:
•  Irritated, inflamed gums.
•  Bleeding gums when you brush and floss.
•  Bad breath that does not go away, no matter what you do.
•  Your gums have begun to recede. This can then lead to tooth sensitivity as the tooth roots become exposed.
•  Your teeth become loose as the periodontal ligaments and jawbone weaken. This can then cause your teeth to shift out of alignment.
•  Tooth loss.

How is Gum Disease Treated?

Treatment for gum disease varies based on the severity. We perform a comprehensive oral exam, complete with dental x-rays, to help determine the best course of action for your needs. Treatments include:
•  Scaling and root planing. This is a deep cleaning of your teeth, which is designed to remove buildup from all surfaces of your teeth, including their roots.
•  Laser treatment. Lasers may be used to remove infected gum tissue, making scaling and root planing possible. They can also be used to disinfect pockets.
•  Pocket reduction surgery. This surgical procedure is done when the periodontal pockets are too deep to clean thoroughly with scaling and root planing. Incisions in the gums expose the roots of the teeth and surrounding jawbone, enabling us to perform a complete cleaning.
•  Soft tissue grafting. This surgical procedure is done to restore a natural gum line following the recession. It involves taking tissue from elsewhere in your mouth and suturing it in place over the areas of recession.
•  Bone grafting. Bone grafting is often done before receiving dental implants when you have lost too much bone mass. Bone mass is taken from elsewhere in the body and placed into the weakened areas of the jaw, restoring strength and shape.

Treating gum disease as soon as it is noticed is essential for preventing the condition from worsening, and allowing your gums and mouth to heal. If you suspect gum disease, call Medhat Dental Excellence to schedule your appointment today at (773) 774-4611.
