At Medhat Dental Excellence, we provide you with the right periodontal care to maintain proper oral hygiene. Periodontitis, also known as gum disease, is a common oral infection that damages the soft tissues and bones that support the teeth. If it is not treated, it can damage the alveolar bone surrounding the teeth.
What is Periodontitis?
The word periodontitis indicates inflammation around the teeth. This occurs when bacteria get stuck to the surface and in between the teeth. When our immune system responds, it releases toxins and these can result in gum inflammation. If you don’t focus on proper periodontal care, it will eventually result in loss of the tooth.
Bacterial plaque, which is a sticky and colorless membrane, is the most common cause of periodontal diseases. These bacteria develop on the teeth surface, and if not removed quickly, it can hardened to form calculus or tartar. Furthermore, it may also increase the risk of various heart issues, including heart attack, strokes, etc.
When treating periodontitis, the primary concern is to remove the bacteria from the teeth and prevent any bone or tissue destruction. To do the same, we carry out a scaling and debridement process to clean the gumline. We use an ultrasonic device to break down the hardened plaque. Furthermore, root planing is executed to smooth out the roots of the teeth. This is done because bacteria can be found within the rough patches of the tooth, thereby increasing the risk of gum diseases.
Generally, a dental cleaning is recommended twice a year. However, depending on your oral condition you may have to visit more often. Along with cleaning, you are likely to be provided with a few medications to treat infected gums. Antimicrobial mouthwash, antiseptic chip, antibiotic gel, antibiotic microsphere, oral antibiotics, etc. are prescribed as a part of periodontal care treatment.
In certain severe conditions where medications and oral hygiene are not proving effective, we may recommend surgical procedures. Flap surgery is performed to remove the plaque collected in deep pockets, or it can be done to reduce the pocket size, making it easier to keep it clean. In this procedure, the gums are pulled back to remove the tartar.
Another popular procedure is bone and tissue grafts. These procedures focuse on regenerating destroyed gum tissues and bones. New synthetic or natural bone is positioned in place of lost bone, promoting further bone growth.
Periodontitis is an oral disease that can cause serious health issues if not treated in a timely manner. Maintaining good oral hygiene is the first step towards reducing the risk associated with periodontitis. Regular brushing and flossing, and maintaining healthy habits, can help you avoid occurrences of periodontitis. Additionally, it is important that you have regular dental exams so that you can identify the risk factors in the early stages and take proactive measures.
